Sheriff Says Fees Are Comparable To Those Charged By State Prisons

Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith has implemented a new fee-based system that will charge inmates a $15 processing fee when admitted and required them to pay for some of medical costs for pre-existing or self-inflicted conditions.

Additional medical services such as visits to the nurse outside of normal sick calls will be $5 and visits to the physician of a non-emergency nature will cost $8. About 65 percent of the cost of any outside medical visits will be billed to the inmate.

No inmate will be denied services due to lack of funds and fee payments will be spread out over the length of incarceration. The county said the fees are comparable to those charged in state prisons.

By passing on the cost of these services, Smith said he is trying to reduce the burden to the taxpayer and make inmates more responsible for the consequences of their actions.

Money collected from the service fees will be utilized for maintenance and upkeep of the jail facility.
