Salmonella linked to restaurant tomatoes
November 3, 2006 03:52:55 PM PST

Contaminated fresh tomatoes served in restaurants were the cause of a recent salmonella outbreak that sickened dozens of people in 21 states, health officials said Friday.

The outbreak, now over, sickened at least 183 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were no reports of deaths, although 22 people were hospitalized. Interviews with victims, including detailed surveys of what they had eaten and where before falling sick, led investigators to suspect restaurant tomatoes as the cause.

"We have identified tomatoes eaten in restaurants as the cause of this outbreak. We don't have any information that a name or a certain type of restaurant is involved. As far as we can tell, it's across the board," said Dr. Christopher Braden, a foodborne outbreak and surveillance expert with the CDC.

The Food and Drug Administration has begun probing the source of the contaminated tomatoes, said Dr. David Acheson, chief medical officer of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

The cases of illness peaked in late September, leading officials to believe the outbreak is now over.

"We don't believe there is a need to issue a specific warning to consumers regarding the consumption of tomatoes," Acheson said.

Outbreaks of salmonella in tomatoes occur periodically. A 2004 outbreak, linked to tomatoes sold in Sheetz convenience stores, sickened more than 400 people.

The states involved in the latest outbreak are: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. There also were two cases reported in Canada.

The salmonella cases came on the heels of an E. coli outbreak, caused by tainted spinach from California, that killed three people and sickened more than 200 others.

Now, I am wonderin' what's next ? I always use tomatoes for my sandwich and salad. Tomatoes help to prevent cancer. I will feel funny to eat sandwich/salad WITHOUT tomatoes.

Whoa.. this is not good! :( i must have tomatoes with my salads or sandwiches.. dang...

This is just the beginning. We haven't seen the worst yet and I'm not even talking about idiots or terrorists adding to the problem. Food cultivation and distribution has been pretty good for a long time. Unfortunately, in trying to feed a growing nation (now 300 million) more things can go wrong and will go wrong.

If this keeps up, vegetarians will be forced to become meat-eaters! ;)

Su*K ... Guess better does my own veg growing garden next year!

I think it was lettuce, that found out after spinach.

I love tomatoes because its important for sauces with cooking the food, such as pizza.

I just learned that it doesn't happen in Iowa where I live. *whew* But, down the road ?? I :dunno: We will have to wait and see............

Yeah, I am aware of this part, but still that's no excuse. Do you think it has somethin' to do with water that they grow vegetables in ? Think that the water ( dirty or pollutions or plagues ) may cause it ?

I am still tryin' to figure it out HOW and WHERE it started from. :-\

Meat-eaters ? Naw, Vampy ! I will find another way. Heh heh It would be NICEEE for other people to lose some weight, eh ?

possibly boars... that what they said on news but not sure for 100 percent. hope they will pinpoint the effect and cause outbreak.

Could be. Part of the problem is how "clean" we live these days. Our bodies aren't as tough those who live in "dirtier" places. It is an exposure issue. Think of the old joke about not drinking the water in Mexico. If it is bottled, you're okay for the most part but from the spigot...no way. Why? Simply, the water isn't to the general standards of the US.

CyberRed,

First: MADCOW, then spinach then now tomatoes..

Wha.. a joke?
Expecting monopolizing goes downhill again?

i am not surprised... this is SO PATHETIC... i also heard that by the year of 2040 or so... we won't be able to eat sushi!!! or anything related to fish because the water is being terribly polluted! and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!! i can't imagine NOT HAVING SUSHI!!! NO WAY IN HELL! :( bushie and others better get their act together and do something... instead of focusing on politics, war, and all that shit... they need to focus on health related issues!!! SHEESH!!! i just can't wait until his term ends!!! :mad2:

I know what you mean, Feisty. I can't imagine without tomatoes, either... because, I MUST have them for my sandwiches/salads. It helps to add the flavors along with other " greens ". Without them, it will taste flat ( no flavors ), ya know ?

I finally got spinach from the grocery store, but that brand name is not Dole or Earthbound. The brand name is " Popeye ". He raised from the DEAD ! YahoOoO !! *laughin'* It is good to see myself happy to eat them. I like it with salads only, not cook. :D I am already bein' spoiled ! LOL

Care to explain why not ? I thought the water is the top prorioty to keep it clean... because, for one think about liver and kidney it needs to function well and other organs, too.

I think it is probably why there are some " organic " stores where they don't grow the crops with pesticide, herbicide, and other kind of chemicals where it may seep in the water ( fertilizer ).
