As graduation rolls around, one girl is closing the door on higher education, but opened up a lot of doors during her 4 years at Southern Oregon University.

Monica Alfaro, who is deaf, will be graduating from SOU this June with a degree in criminal justice. The criminal justice program the reason she gives for picking the school

School officials say Alfaro is the first deaf student to graduate from Southern Oregon University.

She says school was a challenge for her at first, but she gets help from interpreters. And since she's been at the school, a handful of other students with her same disability now go there.

Alfaro also leads campus tours to prospective students with the help of an interpreter. It's a job that she says she loves.

Alfaro says she hopes people hear her story and realize anything is possible. She says, "I always advise people to never give up." She adds, "I've been through a lot these passed few years, and if I can do it, so can you."

Alfaro will graduate on June 5th. Her hope is to go back to Klamath County and get a job working for child victims against crime.
