I hoped Ed Dennis would explain his recent act of firing Jane Mulholland, director of the Oregon School for the Deaf. What staff got recently were vague responses to critical questions like why she was dismissed, why the abruptness, who will replace her, what's next? Dennis alluded to "better management, a new direction" but no hint of why or what.
Jane was widely popular and for good reason. She exemplified professionalism, fairness, intelligence and warmth. Any reputable school administration would hire her in a heartbeat.
People listened with furrowed brows and head shakes of disbelief. Instead of "I don't get it," I realized that "they don't get it." They don't understand the tight sense of family OSD is or its history. Dennis was hired only three months ago and admittedly has no background in education, special education or knowledge about deaf culture.
He asked us to work together in this transition. Dismiss possibly the best director this school has seen without reason or warning and he expects us to work together? His trust is damaged.
I will attend the next public forum not because I expect straightforward answers but to be one of hundreds who oppose a blatantly wrong decision.
