Fire forces deaf woman, 2 children from Des Moines home | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs
A house fire forced a deaf woman and her two children out of their Des Moines home early Wednesday morning.
The mother, whose name was not made public, woke up to the smell of smoke shortly after 12:20 a.m. at the family’s 1620 Allison St. home. A 10-year-old called 911, and the family escaped the home without injury.
Firefighters believe the blaze started in the basement. A specific cause is under investigation, said Capt. Dave Brown, Des Moines Fire Department spokesman.
Damage to the home was estimated at $35,000. The home is unfit to occupy, Brown said.
