Fire destroys second-floor of Flint duplex, deaf man escapes burning home with help from neighbors | MLive.com

A fire destroyed the second-floor residence at a duplex on Reynolds Street near Knight Avenue around 5:30 p.m., fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze and Red Cross was being contacted about shelter for two men who were displaced by the fire.

A grease pan left on a second-floor stove appeared to be the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $15,000 in damage to the second floor and stairwell, fire officials said.

The resident of the second floor immediately escaped the fire, but a deaf man who lives on the first floor had to be coaxed out of the home by neighbors and police.

"It took about five minutes to get him to come out," said neighbor Don Wilson, 44.

The man got out unharmed and firefighters soon arrived and doused the flames, fire officials said.
