HUNDREDS of staff from Cheshire Fire and Rescue took to the road last Wednesday in a bid to make the county a safer place for everyone.

The second Cheshire Safety Day was aimed at raising awareness on how to prevent fire and what to do in an emergency situation.

More than a dozen events were held across the service’s area and firefighters community safety staff, support staff, managers and fire cadets completed 1,125 home safety assessments.

At the service’s training facility in Winsford, deaf children and adults witnessed how emergency services reacted to a mock collision on what is known as the country’s shortest stretch of motorway, the M999.

Dina Patel, equality outreach worker for Cheshire Fire, said: “The event is aimed at children of deaf adults who would have to raise the alarm if they found themselves in an emergency situation.

“We had people talking and signing through the whole procedure – it is important that they know what information is needed to get the message across.

“We also gave them a tour around our control room so they can see how an emergency call comes in.

“We are looking at piloting a scheme that flags up calls from the deaf community so we can offer them more support that way.”

Spectators sat for just 15 minutes while fire crews cut the roof of the car and paramedics freed the injured dummy inside.

Mel Pitts, Deaf Advocate for Cheshire Fire, said: “This event was really about getting all the emergency services together to raise awareness of deaf issues.

“It is about making the emergency services accessible to all of the deaf community, whether they are deaf themselves or are the child of someone who is deaf, and taking the fear factor out of making those calls.”

Clr David Topping, chairman of the Fire Authority, joined forces in delivering home safety assessments across the county.

He said: “The day was a fantastic success and one that saw us directly engaging with thousands of people both in homes and on our roads.”
