hello, my name is Jackie. l.m hoping l can make some friends on here. I'v been hard of hearing for some years after 2 ear op's ear ( on my left ear approx 20 yrs ago, now found out last week im losing my hearing very fast in my good,( right side.) l knew it was happening but it's still been a shock to be told l losing my hearing very fast. I'm in process of waiting to see if i'm to be sent to a ENT specialist. l also have severe M.E which leaves me bed bound a lot and also isolated, so im feeling a bit down at moment about the hearing loss on top of everything else. l just dont know where to start in getting myself organized to meeting anther challenge in my life. my husband is my carer and is very supportive but l feel l need to reach out to the deaf community who will understand. lv decided to learn lip reading ( on line classes) as l dont think l could managed sign language as it looks as it would drain my energy , which l have so little of. l also have glaucoma which l think is progressing as well..Seeing my specialist on Frid to know more. Sorry im sounding depressed but im feeling a bit over whelmed at moment and very alone :(

It's ok to reach out when feeling overwhelmed. That is what community is for and I'm sorry to hear of your struggles. It sounds like the glaucoma being tended to will be especially important to keep communicating. I wish you all the best with your appointments. The medications have come a long way. Consistency with the eyes drops are important.
I respect whatever modality of communication you choose, however, there are wonderful online sources for signing if you feel lip reading just isn't enough at some point. Statistics show that even "good lip readers" only catch about 35% with accuracy. Bill Vicars is a Deaf professor that posts his lectures online. Fun and easy way to see how you feel about the basics.
Stay mindful, it's fortunate you have a supportive husband through all of this and I wish you both the best.

Thank you for your reply..your very kind. I'm just having a bad day today as i'm usually a very positive person. l need to just give myself some tlc and think about where to research about where to get support with what possible aids l will need in the home to make my life a little easier . Iv been in denial as iv been coping well with the hearing in my good ear. Today is the first time l'v reached out to anyone about it, so thank you again for your reply.

You are most welcome. If by aid you mean in home help, I have a number to help you. I work in the mental health care field and help individuals obtain these services. If this would help you, send me a message and I'll give you the number and steps needed.
Sounds like a TLC day will be good and I hope it helps. :)

many thanks. l live in the UK but thankfully l do get some support already from local council for help with my M.E. l was thinking l need to do research on Tec aids for the home that might help for my hearing loss concerning door bell, telephone etc etc. those sort of things. l didnt even know about 'smart watches' that lv just read about of this forum..as you can tell lv not very knowledgeable about tec things lol.

Hey Paris, please don't feel alone or down, there are a few cheery people here & silly ones like me. :booty::rofl:

For searching hearing aid tech stuff, use the search here on Aldeaf, there's a lot of good related posts.

I'm sure you're in very good hands with your husband as carer & you know our health care is one the best in Europe, so chill out & have a little fun here.

Welcome to Alldeaf. :welcome:

I deal with open angle glaucoma when the Surgeon gets the small drill out and makes a hole where it needs to drain the eyeball. Clears it up for a year or so. Its about time I go back and get another hole drilled. But with bigger surgery pending that will just have to wait. the actual work is only a few minutes. It takes way longer to stuff the drugs and deal with the people prior to. Its always a mess because I am a pain patient and the eyes are absolute most sensitive spot anywhere in your entire body for sensing pain. So nothing but the best when they drill it.

As far as isolation, get out and find something to do regularly. We have a small Amish shop up the road from where we are and once a year about this time we spend a day up there. No walmart crap allowed. And its usually the honey we are after. The bees would have finished their work not too long ago. The main goal is to get out of the house. Or get out from whatever grind you are trapped in.

many thanks for the reply..your very kind. Unfortunately l cant get out as l have severe ME for quiet a few years now...l think its called ME/CFS in the States. I'm mostly bedbound with a lot of pain all over the body and extreme Neuro symptoms , brain fog etc. l can stand up for about 1/2 hour on and off during the day then have to lie flat. We moved to a small bungalow 4 years ago to be near my daughter and made a English Cottage garden that l can see from my bedroom window..it's full of cottage flowers at moment, l love it. If l push myself to much l have major'crashes' which takes days to weeks to recover. The hearing loss and now the possible eye sight loss is just one more challenge, but hey, we all bounce back if we put our mind to it. I'm feeling much better today now that l'v reached out on this forum.. thanks for the kind welcome...hope everyone is well and staying safe.

Redditch is a nice place. I've always lived in the south, tends to be a little warmer.

It's a pity so many people suffer from different health conditions. I've recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I don't even know whether I have already realized I have it. I'm on tecfidera now. This medication is proved to be effective, so I hope for the result. But I'm very afraid of awful symptoms like pain, tremors, etc. But I try thinking positively.
Sorry about yr diagnose of M.S. lv got 2 friends who have it and its a challenge in life. but the good news is (if there is any good news) is that there are a lot of medications nowadays for M.S . Yes l agree, thinking positively can really help cope from day to day. Im feeling much more positive since l posted this first thread. l feel clearer in my mind and everything dosent look so dark. Im still stuck in bed today as im in a really bad M/E crash from going to all my appointments but l dont feel so down. Thank you for your reply and please keep in touch on this forum as id really like to know how you are getting on. x
