FBI Warns of Possible Terror Plot Against New York City Subway During Holidays
Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Federal authorities are warning of a possible Al Qaeda-orchestrated terror plot against New York City subway and other transit systems during the holidays, FOX News has confirmed.

The potential threat — described in an internal FBI memo as "plausible but unsubstantiated" — does not extend beyond the New York City area, sources told FOX News. But commuters could see security tighten across the country.

A person briefed on the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the intelligence-gathering work, said the threat may also be directed at the passenger rail lines running through New York, such as Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road. The threat surfaced on one of the busiest travel days of the year and when tens of thousands of tourists are in New York City for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a joint bulletin late Tuesday night to local and state law enforcement authorities about the possible plot, a Homeland Security official told FOX News.

The report states that in late September, Al Qaeda may have talked about attacking transit systems in and around New York City during the holiday season.
"These discussions reportedly involved the use of suicide bombers or explosives placed on subway/passenger rail systems," the bulletin says.

The FBI said it had no indication that any such plot was beyond the very earliest stages of planning.

"We have no specific details to confirm that this plot has developed beyond aspirational planning, but we are issuing this warning out of concern that such an attack could possibly be conducted during the forthcoming holiday season," states the warning, which is dated Tuesday.

While federal agencies regularly issue all sorts of advisory warnings, the language of this one is particularly blunt.

Intelligence and homeland security officials are working with local authorities to try to corroborate the information "and will continue to investigate every possible lead," according to the memo.

Beth Maderal, 26, learned terrorists might be plotting a holiday attack as she stood on a Brooklyn subway platform with her mother waiting for the train to Manhattan. Maderal said any threat gives her pause, but she is not going to stop riding the subway because she depends on it so much.

"If you get scared that means they win," commuter Omid Sima said on the platform of the subway below Rockefeller Center. "There's always been terror warnings. I can't change my life because of that."

A source with close knowledge of the bulletin says the information has links to the tribal areas of Pakistan.

"Every resource is being brought to bear on corroborating this information," the source told FOX News.

FOX News' Catherine Herridge and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

now that homeland security knows about this threat, they can take all precautions necessary to avert an attack.

 nothing new... been hearing that for past several years... and I'm still commuting via NYC subway everyday... :dunno:

well shit if it's for real, let's hope it happened when i'm not in subway, eh? :laugh2:

There is also the prediction of a biological warfare/nuclear attack on American soil in the next 5 years.

US report predicts nuclear or biological attack by 2013 | World news | guardian.co.uk

Just remember that it was the same group (FBI, CIA, etc) that also warned India of an impending terrorist attack in Mumbai and they choose not to adhere to our warning........

As for NYC subways--maybe they should install security check-points like they do at the airports.....

seriously though...all this talk about terrorists bombing public transportation systems really makes me nervous. i can't drive and rely on pubic transportation on a daily basis. if suicide bombers and terrorists had the means to conduct attacks as they do in the middle east, i'd be petrified and would never leave my home again. having said that, at least homeland security has been very effective in preventing attacks. from what i understand, 19 threats of terrorism have been twarted since 9/11.

:laugh2: oh well... I guess I just didn't care because they cannot hit ALL public transportation. The probability of me being a victim of terrorist attack in public transportation is pretty small... very small.... However - I get out thru Port Authority which is the major spot so my probability is going up... but then.. I do not commute during rush hour.... so again... my probability is going down :laugh2:

sounds like the similar attack that happened in England afew years ago.

That's the risk we have to take as Americans. Sucks but that's the price for our freedom. Wish it was a peaceful world. *sighs*

Up to people if they want to live out of fear or just do their daily thing and not obsess too much on it.

Yea, it is frightening!

i don't have a problem continuing to live my life, but i'll tell you one thing: if there were an influx of car bombings here in the u.s., you'd better believe that i'd be d*mn petrified! :Ohno:

you bet i do. i respect them for all they do to protect and serve our country. there's no way i would be brave enough to fight in their place, so they have my utmost respect.

I would love to spend my quality time with my boyfriend for holidays without worryin' about prepare in case. Care-free mind and enjoy every moment of it. You know, like relaxin' on paradise island. :P

As for me, I would just go on as usual like I do in my everday life. If, terrorist just happens shoot me at the wrong place and wrong time, then I will drop dead, anyhow. There's no way I will know what place is safe for me to go. Always expect the unexpect.

we don't have any subways where i live, so that's one less thing i have to worry about.
