What do you think about fate?

:fruit:

A man's character is his fate.
Heraclitus

In other words, I believe you make your own fate by your judgements and actions.

Short answer is, no. I believe in predestination. Don't confuse the two.

I am a determinist. Everything that happens in the universe happens because it must happen and because it cannot happen any other way. In other words, everything happens for a reason. But I am not a fatalist.

interesting thread!

i believe that life is what you make of it..but i also believe that sometimes fate steps in

Not sure, depends on how one defines 'Fate'.

Fate the muse - weaver- puppet master? no

Fate the appearance of 'luck/chance/random happening' (good or bad) ? yes

Fate like Karma, or "the three" or "three by three" ?
-no but I wish it did. or maybe I just want that happened more immediately... and not in reverse...

Fate like Determination, Predestination, lack of free will? (taken separately all very different) no, no, no

Um- can't think of anymore...

I think what we call fate is just those instances when life goes in our favor.

I alway believe in living life. Not worrying about whether it is a fate or not. I take what I can take and adapt.

Fate is why I am against the death penalty. Sounds weird, but there you have it.

And if/when they don't?

I'm just saying they don't refer to it as fate when it isn't fortunate. "Their eyes met across the room, and it was fate." How many times do your eyes meet others that you don't end up with? Plenty! Fate is just a cute name you put on something when it works out, the rest you forget or ignore.

Good point.

Good point. However, I have heard on way more than one occasion woeful remarks when something unfortunate happened to some folks.....and ending typically ".......and I guess that's my fate....".

I believe in Devine intervention. Things have “fallen into place” for me.
1) How I met my husband.
2) How I knew I wanted to marry him. He’d proposed once, and I had said maybe. A few months later, while at work, cupid’s arrow “hit” and I knew I would say yes the next time he asked (and to make sure he knew he would ask, I sent him a card letting him know indirectly he could).
3) Fast forward, God knew my husband would die in a few years and He set into motion for things to fall into place so that I would be living in a house that I could retire in comfortably (our previous house would have been too much work to take care of). And that I would have a full-time job w/good pay (not great, but good).
4) Now the house we/I’ve been renting is available for me to buy – right when I’m coming out of bankruptcy and my credit score is good enough for the mortgage…and the tax-deductions on the interest will come in handy as I change my filing status from Married-Filing Jointly (qualifying widow) to Single.
Not that I haven’t had to do some “work” to help these things happen, but they would not have happened w/o His help.

"Fate controls who walks into your life, but you decide who you let walk out, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go."

^^^^^^ This. :)

Fair fate, good fortune - you made a good decision which led to this.
Ill fated, bad luck - you made a wrong choice which led to this.

This does not rule out the silly idiot in the car behind me where upon seeing the ILY sticker the my bumper of my tiny lunch box sized car, tail gates me and makes nonsensical hand gestures out the window of his large and dirty pickup truck. He and his friend were also apparently making nonsensical mouth movements. This did cause a bit of a problem for him since he could not pass granny's car on a narrow two lane which oddly and suddenly slowed to about 30 in a 50 zone. This caused him and his dear friend no end of irritation, leading to his hand gestures and oral movements to suddenly become quite clear all the way till the next available passing zone. (about 1/2 mile - lol)

He must have had ill fate, eh?

Your car seems to have the same problem my car has when it feels the fan from the engine of the vehicle behind it on it's bumper.
