Fast and Furious wiretap information obtained by Congress
By Sharyl Attkisson Topics Congress

Updated June 6, 11:54 a.m. ET

(CBS News) The lead House Republican investigating Operation Fast and Furious, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), today said senior Justice Department officials had specific information that their federal agents were using controversial "gunwalking" tactics.

Justice Department officials have consistently denied that was the case. But today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa revealed that he has reviewed sealed wiretap applications in the case, which were signed off on the authority of Holder's Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Issa wrote Holder "having seen the wiretap applications, we now know that the information coming from the (Justice) Department has been misleading. That must stop."

Issa and others familiar with the wiretap applications say they contain a "remarkable level of detail about these objectionable tactics." That appears contrary to Holder's testimony to Congress on Nov. 8, 2011 when Holder stated, "I'd be surprised if the tactics themselves about gunwalking were actually contained in those, in those [wiretap] applications. I have not seen them, but I would be surprised [if] that were the case." Holder later made a similar statement to Congress on Feb. 2, 2012.

"The wiretap applications obtained by the [House Oversight] Committee show such statements made by senior [Justice] Department officials... to be false and misleading," said Issa's letter. He added the applications "detail specific actions taken by agents in Fast and Furious. This includes conscious decisions not to interdict weapons that agents knew were illegally purchased by smugglers taking weapons to Mexico," also called "gunwalking."

Late yesterday, the Justice Department sent a letter to Issa and House Republican leaders that says "we disagree with [Issa's] assertions." Justice officials also said "we are legally prohibited from commenting on the content of sealed court documents."

Issa said he provided Democrats on the House Oversight Committee copies of the wiretap applications for their review.

In response, the lead Democrat on the Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings wrote Issa to say that his allegations "mischaracterize the contents and significance" of the wiretap applications. Further, Cummings said testimony to date indicates senior Justice Department officials never saw the actual wiretap applications, but instead were presented with summaries.

Six wiretap applications used in ATF's Operation Fast and Furious were intended to allow agents to listen in on phone calls as part of their investigation. They have been sealed by a federal judge but copies were obtained by Congress. Since the documents are technically under seal, Issa said they will be not provided for public review. In the past, Holder has threatened anyone who passed along information in, or divulged contents of, the wiretaps with prosecution, since they are under seal.

Imagine that! Of course Holder lied....

finally! now we can get down to it. it's pretty obvious that Holder was flat-out lying at congressional hearing.

what I really want to know is how could somebody give a go-ahead for this ridiculous Fast and Furious operation. who is that insane enough to go ahead with it?

Do you think Obama should fire Eric Holder?

Do you think Obama should fire Eric Holder?

I think Eric Holder should be in jail. Since this occurred under both Bush and Obama Administrations... Both Presidents should be held accountable for it. It's impossible if they knew nothing of it unless somebody was carefully orchestrating this whole farce behind their backs.

Going to be interesting to see how MM spins this. Anyone think MM will call for Eric's head?

Please do report back with your finding. I'd like to know how long will this stay in headline/news (page 1-2) and/or what other news story would quickly bury this scandal.

Anyone think MM will call for Eric's head?
I hope so.

IMO - I think this scandal will get quickly sweep under carpet as fast as they can or twisted it into something else like rogue director because this operation obviously goes up all the way up and handful of high-ranking seniors are involved. We'll see then.....

Yep....Holder lied, someone died. It will be great to see his smugness shown the door. I hope he sees a jail cell as well.

And probably Obama knew about this, too. Kind of hard to imagine that Obama didn't know anything about it from the beginning. Two peas in a pod I'd say.

Oh, you don't have to hope. Just do it. Go up there and make a citizen's arrest. Take him to jail yourself.

So, Obama knew... Is there a possibility that the gunwalk program was a means to helping the cartels build up weapon stocks so they can defeat the Spanish-controlled Mexican government?

Sadly, you are probably right. Given MM love affair with Obama.....

no. that's just ridiculous. one plausible theory is that gun hater politicians wanted this to happen so that they can have something to push for gun ban or highly-restrictive gun laws by blaming NRA/gun supporter politicians for having lax gun laws. They spinned the news by saying lot of guns on drug cartels' hands were from easily obtained from gun stores in states with lax gun laws.

sleezeballs including Mayor Bloomberg were blasting and finger-pointing at anybody in gun-friendly states for causing crimes to go up because lot of stolen guns used in crimes were obtained from neighboring gun-friendly states (which is a lie).

and guess what? lot of assault weapons used in drug cartel shootings cannot be found or sold at gun stores because it's a military-grade. these guns was actually taken from military armory for Fast and Furious operation. I mean seriously? anti-aircraft machine gun? grenade launcher? can't get that from any gun store in America.

what a major farce. and comical. this truth was an embarrassing gaffe for anti-gunners because it has been a lie all along. the government did this, not gun stores or armed citizens. it's a shame that there will be a huge cover-up because lot of Mexican senior-ranking government officials and officers plus US Border Patrol agent were killed by Fast & Furious guns. Mexican government is not very pleased about this.
