I just saw this on CNN; click the link below for the story.

Crashed 2 miles from airfield, pilot ejected from the plane, unsure of condition of pilot or anyone on the ground. San Diego has one of largest Naval base on West coast.

The link will be provided as soon as possible, reports of MSNBC also covering the story.

One home was completely destroyed by the plane.

That would be the Miramar Marine Air Station (Ex-Navy), where Top Gun was once filmed.

Unfortunately, these things happen, usually out to sea. The US Gov't will be footing the bill for this! At least the house owners will be getting a brand spanking new house! LOL

At least one house and two cars on fire after F-18 crash. I think someone may get a new house AND a new car!

They have also locked down a nearby school due to the chemicals and the mass amount of traffic and EVOs.

(CNN) -- A military jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in San Diego, California, on Monday as its pilot tried to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, an FAA spokesman told CNN.

The pilot ejected before the jet -- an F/A-18, according to a U.S. military source -- went down two miles from the airfield about 11:55 a.m. PT, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Information about injuries wasn't immediately available, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said. CNN affiliate KGTV reported that the pilot was transported to a local hospital in "mild status."

At least one structure at the crash site was on fire, KGTV reported.

The pilot was in communication with military air traffic controllers before the jet crashed, the FAA said.
