Loa loa is a filarial nematode (roundworm) species that lives within humans and other mammals’ bodies, specifically their eyes. It is commonly known as the ‘eye worm’ and its maturing larvae occupy the subcutaneous layer of the skin of humans, causing disease. The larvae develop in horseflies and are passed to mammals like humans through a fly bite. If it gets into the eye tissue, hosts can feel it moving in the eye and can see it floating in there if it’s big enough. The worm is easily killed using antibiotics or is extracted through minor surgery, though it can live inside a human for up to 17 years.

UGH I saw this on Facebook! ( I f-ing love science ) and it makes my eyes water every time I SEE IT! Blech! I work in medical but thank god I have never seen this!
