The Times Record: Features - Event To Reach Out To Deaf Community
The Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House will hold its first-ever event for women in the deaf community.
"Lunch & Learn for Deaf Women of All Ages" is slated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cancer Support House, 3324 S. M St., according to Michele Delawder with the Cancer Support House.
"We've been working now for quite awhile to try to reach out to minorities and the underserved populations," said Delawder, who is a sign language interpreter. "The deaf community is included in that."
The event will cover cancer awareness and preventative education important to every woman, including deaf women, she said. A sign language interpreter will be there for the presentation, which will benefit hearing women as well. Videos presented will be open-captioned, and sign language students can attend.
Teresa Jones of the Ozark Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Blanche West with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and Delawder will discuss a variety of topics pertinent to women's health. Topics covered at the event include early signs and symptoms of ovarian and breast cancer, breast self-exams, cancer risks, when to call the doctor, why getting an annual exam may not be enough and more.
Lunch will be served. The educational session and lunch are supported by a grant from the Arkansas Cancer Coalition, Delawder said. Door prizes also will be awarded.
Delawder said the CSH hopes to have at least 10 to 15, if not more, attend the Lunch & Learn for Deaf Women of All Ages, which she said would be a good turnout, especially for the deaf community.
With Delawder, an experienced sign language interpreter, on staff, the CSH can assist the deaf community if a family member is in need of cancer support services.
