www.kansascity.com | 06/29/2007 | ACROSS THE METRO: Study spurs big ideas for Metcalf; other news briefs
In 1900, Luther “Dummy” Taylor threw the entire sport of baseball a curveball by becoming the first deaf pitcher in the major leagues.
Tonight, the Kansas City Royals and Olathe Deaf Cultural Center will honor Taylor’s legacy as an outstanding pitcher for the New York Giants with a special presentation and recognition of the former Olathe ballplayer.
Taylor grew up in Oskaloosa and later attended the School for the Deaf in Olathe. After playing in the minors, Taylor was picked up by the Giants, where he also introduced sign language into the sport as a part-time first-base coach.
After retiring from baseball, Taylor returned as a teacher at his alma mater in Olathe.
Olathe city officials and representatives of the Kansas School for the Deaf and the Deaf Cultural Center will be on hand to throw out the first pitch, which will be caught by members of Taylor’s family.
The Royals play the Chicago White Sox at 6:10 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium.
