R&B Singer Strips Near Dallas Knoll Where JFK Shot
Erykah Badu is stirring controversy with her new music video, "Window Seat," which shows the R&B singer and Dallas native stripping naked at the site of JFK's assassination.
The five-and-a-half-minute video, which instantly went viral on YouTube on Monday, shows Badu walking in front of the Texas School Book Depository, from which President John F. Kennedy was shot fatally in 1963.
As she walks, she strips nude and is "shot down" near where Kennedy was murdered. The word "groupthink" streams out of Badu's head in purple fluid as she lays on the ground.
The Washington Post reports Badu could have gotten a year in jail for her latest artistic statement.
City spokesman Frank Librio said Badu's crew never applied for required permits. He said "guerrilla" film crews who "usually shoot these scenes in one take know that if they are discovered they would face arrest and/or penalties."
On her Twitter feed, Badu said the video "was shot guerrilla style, no crew, 1 take, no closed set, no warning, 2 min., downtown dallas, then ran like hell."
Dallas residents aren't pleased by the publicity.
"I don't understand how someone who lives here, who is a resident of this city, could do such a thing," Lindalyn Adams, a longtime civic volunteer who is credited with rescuing Dealey Plaza from neglect and exploitation in the 1980s, told the Dallas Morning News.
John Crawford, president of the nonprofit Downtown Dallas, added: "It's in poor taste and poor judgment, in my opinion."
Badu told the Dallas Morning News in interview Monday that the video was a "protest" and "about liberating yourself."
She said she chose Dealey Plaza as the backdrop because "the grassy knoll was the most monumental place in Dallas," and she compared the criticism she expected to receive to Kennedy's murder.
"I tied it in a way that compared the assassination to the character assassination one would go through after showing his or her self completely," she said. "That's exactly the action I wanted to display."
