News Flash!!! - Pilot dies midflight, FAA says

(CNN) -- A captain on a Continental jet died Thursday midflight while flying from Brussels, Belgium, to Newark, New Jersey, the Federal Aviation Administration and Continental Airlines said.

Continental said the 61-year-old Newark-based pilot died "apparently of natural causes." The pilot had 21 years of service with Continental, the airline said.

FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac said Continental Flight 61 would receive priority when it arrives at Newark International Airport around noon ET.

The airline said the crew on the flight included an additional relief pilot who took the place of the deceased man.

The Boeing 777 is carrying 247 passengers, Continental said.

scary! sounds like he got a heart attack.
 
That's scary but at least they were prepared to have a back-up pilot on the plane to take over the situation.

But, unfortunately, that had to happen. Bummer. :(

How sad, good thing there was a back up pilot to take over the flight. That's a scary moment indeed, glad the plane landed safe during emergancy.

(CNN) -- Continental Flight 61, whose pilot died midflight Thursday while flying from Brussels, Belgium, to Newark, New Jersey, has landed safely, the Federal Aviation Administration and Continental Airlines said.

The Boeing 777 landed at Newark International Airport at 11:49 a.m. ET Thursday, the airline said, after the 61-year-old Newark-based pilot died "apparently of natural causes."

No further details were given.

Asked whether the plane's 247 passengers had been told of the situation, a Continental spokesman said only that the plane had arrived safely.

Passengers told CNN they were not told of the situation, only that an announcement for a doctor was made during the flight.

The airline said the crew on the flight included a relief pilot who took the place of the deceased man.

The pilot had 21 years of service with Continental, the airline said.

Nice, that never told while in air. I'm certainly anyone would goes wild n' panic.
 
I agree. I think it was smart that the passengers weren't told until landing. It would have just created unnecessary panic, especially in the wake of the recent Air France crash.
