Jason Nichols can't hear, but that doesn't stop him from doing what he wants.
The 36-year-old Clyde Township man is heading to South Korea with 14 other deaf persons Monday for a five-day trip to learn about the country's culture and meet other deaf people.
Nichols was chosen out of about 350 entrants who applied for the trip with DeafNation and the online show "No Barriers" with Joel Barish.
"Joel really shows the world that deaf people can travel the world
without barriers," Nichols said during a typed interview. "I will not let (anybody) barrier me ... I can do anything except hear."
Nichols said he had always wanted to travel to Asia and learn more about the different cultures. The trip is sponsored by the Korea Tourism Organization and Asiana Airlines.
Along with visiting cultural destinations, Nichols said the group also will visit a school for the deaf and meet deaf business owners.
After returning from the trip, Nichols said he plans to move to Brazil to continue experiencing new things.
"No Barriers" is a documentary-style show that features stories of deaf people across the globe.
DeafNation was founded in 2003 by brothers Joel and Jed Barish, who are both deaf.
