More than 200 alumni are expected to attend a reunion marking the 115th anniversary of the North Dakota School for the Deaf in Devils Lake on Friday through Sunday.

Hosted by the NDSD Society, it will feature seminars, a banquet, a performance in American Sign Language by entertainer Jeremy Quiroya and a public forum at 7 p.m. Friday to discuss the school's future.

When Rocky Cofer, superintendent for the North Dakota School for the Deaf, resigned recently, North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Wayne Sanstead said he didn't know when or if a replacement would be sought. Sanstead said the future of the school was in question because of declining enrollment.

Members of the NDSD Society said they want an open dialogue with Sanstead and Carmen Suminski, interim NDSD superintendent. The public is invited to participate. The forum will be in the school gymnasium and will be voice interpreted.

A tour of the school's facilities and museum is scheduled Saturday afternoon.

For more information on the reunion, the public forum or the tour, contact James Johnson, NDSD Society secretary, at james.johnson@ndsdsociety.org.

that's sad that enrollement is declining...I wonder however if they could up enrollment by starting regional day programs that would be run under the aegius of the School for the Deaf....and I would bet that in a few years enrollment may be up again b/c of kids wanting more socialization beyond a limited two or three people or once some of the CI or oral kids start rebeling!
