Earthquake Shakes Southern California
From Times Staff Writers
An earthquake roiled Southern California early this afternoon, shoved bottles and bric-a-brac from shelves and shook buildings from the desert to the Pacific Ocean.

At least one injury was reported at a resort in Lake Arrowhead. There were also reports of minor damage, including downed telephone lines.

Two rockslides were reported in San Bernardino County, but there was no indication of traffic problems.

The quake was initially measured at a magnitude of 5.3, but was downgraded to 4.9, said a spokesperson for the National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo. The 8-mile-deep quake struck at 1:53 p.m. Pacific time, about 70 miles east from downtown Los Angeles.

"It was felt in a pretty wide area, especially Palm Springs and the Los Angeles areas. But we have not had reports of any damage at this time," said Dale Grant, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Center.

Grant said the epicenter, two miles northeast of Yucaipa, was near the San Andreas Fault. He noted that a 5.1 earthquake was recorded near Anza on June 12.

In addition to the main quake, Lucy Jones, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Pasadena, said about 25 aftershocks were reported, the strongest at magnitude 3.5.

The aftershocks were occurring at a "normal level," she said.

"This is not an unusual level of earthquake activity," Jones said of the state's recent quakes.

The San Bernardino County sheriff's office reported two rockslides on Highway 38, at mile marker 22, and two miles north of the Valley of the Falls. Teams have been sent to assess the damage.

Helicopters circled Routes 215, 10, and 30 looking for further damage.

In Lake Arrowhead, a woman sustained a head injury when a chandelier fell at the Lake Arrowhead Resort. She was treated in the emergency room at Mountains Community Hospital, said Susan Lowell, director of patient care services. She said she did not know the patient's condition.

"We have not had any reports of any damage," said Toy Snyder, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. "But the phones are ringing off the hook."

The county sheriff's patrol station in Yucaipa was evacuated after the jolt but there was no damage to the building and the electrical and phone service were not interrupted, according to a clerk reached by telephone.

"It was felt very strongly … but nothing fell," she said.

Telephone lines were down in Yucaipa, according to police spokesperson Anthony Vega. There were also reports of downed telephone lines in Upland and parts of Riverside County.

"We all jumped up and started getting under our desks, but we have no reports of anything yet," San Bernardino County Fire spokeswoman Renee Cameron said minutes after the temblor struck.

The quake was felt in downtown Los Angeles, Palm Desert. Office buildings swayed on the Westside.

Today's earthquake followed several others during the past week. An earthquake measuring 7.0 rattled off the coast of Northern California on Tuesday evening. Authorities, in turn, issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas from Alaska to Mexico.

On Sunday, a quake measuring 5.1 struck 20 miles south of Palm Springs in Anza. A quake of 7.8 hit Chile a day later, killing at least 11 people. In recent days, an earthquake measuring 6.8 struck the Aleutian Islands, where it was preceded and followed by smaller quakes.

yea my friend told me today cuz of she live in there... sigh... i hope everything will be okay.. i pray for them who live there..

T. warning

Hmm, the earthquake was in NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. Cresent City.

In fact, we here on the Oregon Coast received T. warnings.

I wonder if anyone is scared of scientist predictions of possibilty of california becoming an island?

I'm not scared. I've bought a lot of land in the southland deserts in hope they'd suddenly become beachfront properties. And as of now, I'm selling my northern calif properties to be able to get more southland desert acreage.

Maybe I can build an amusement park called Nesmuthland.

And finally these earthquakes wee been getting lately could have been the Sept 5 predicition that never showed up.
