Dr. Phil' Regrets Talking About Spears

NEW YORK (AP) - Television's "Dr. Phil" McGraw says he regrets talking about Britney Spears' mental health after visiting her in the hospital, but didn't violate the family's trust.

"I regret making the statement. It didn't help. It didn't work," the syndicated TV psychologist said Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Spears, 26, was hospitalized in Los Angeles after a child custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline resulted in an hours-long standoff with police Jan. 3. Federline has sole physical and legal custody of their two sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

McGraw said he visited the pop singer as a family friend, and rejected critics who accused him of practicing psychology without a license.

"I did not go there to diagnose her. I did not go there to treat her," said McGraw, who showed up at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Jan. 5 as Spears was about to be discharged.

McGraw said he retired his Texas license after 25 years of private practice because of the demands of his "Dr. Phil" daytime talk show.

The Spears family has accused McGraw of betraying their trust by making an "inappropriate" public statement about the singer's hospitalization.

McGraw had told celebrity news TV shows that Spears was in "dire" need of medical and psychological help.

In an appearance on NBC's "Today" show Wednesday, McGraw said his public comments after visiting Spears were intended to prevent rumors and misinformation.

"I wanted to stop speculation about what may have gone on in there," he said.

ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co. NBC is owned by the General Electric Co.

My opinion is that Dr. Phil is an idiot!

I'm not a big fan of Dr. Phil, either, for any number of reasons. I wonder, did he truly retire his liscense voluntarily because his show was taking so much time, or did the APA give him the option of retiring his licesnse or having it jerked because of unethical behavior? Some of the things he does on his show are very questionable, both in theory, practice, and ethics.

Agree

Phil is just another performer relying on extreme good-looks (bald, mustache, elderly--you know, every woman's dream).

Other than that good part, I think his public psychology is a joke, like the hypocritical hype posted by Laura Schlessinger. Kelsey Grammer and David Pierce do much better jobs on Frasier where at least being know-it-all clowns is honest comedy.

Phil really shot himself in the foot by talking to the press about the Spears visit. No matter how he tries to spin it, it is unconscionable behavior for any therapist, health care worker, teacher, lawyer, pastor, etc.

I have to say that dr.phil is not extacly honest saint in helping Brittany Spears, I think he is doing to get the public media attention to launch his career in show bussiness. I think he a faker!

Oh yea, Dr Phil is a chick magnet and he absolutly did it for ratings. I feel kind of sorry for Brittany. Seems like the media and photogs just wont leave her alone which I am sure is contributing to her problems.

Agreed. At least Frasier presented accurate representation of theory. Laura Schlessinger never studied psychology or counseling. She is nothing more than a radio "Dear Abby", and a poor one at that. And Dr. Phil converys the message that there are "quick fixes" to some very complicated problems. That is a very dangerous message to give.

But, I have to admit to being rather fond of the the bald, mustachioed look! (Just not on him, particularly.):giggle:

Dr.Phil did made announcement in his show few days ago that he saw no need to apply for license in California...In my opinion if he is a real pschologist... he should apply lincense in Calfiornia after he relocated from Texas...Something is FISHY....

I agreed there, I always felt something fishy about him. Then Oprah says in people mag that she regratted every trusthing to be honest with her on her show. Now she chewing him out to get him fired from what I heard.
