Dog Returns Home After 2 Years and Several Unlikely Events | Corpus Christi, TX | KZTV10.com |

A local family is celebrating after an unexpected reunion with their dog, who had been missing for more than two years.

Mona is a three year old mixed breed dog, and she's also completely deaf. She went missing two years ago. But this week her owners, Lisa and Jack Ramirez welcomed Mona back home.

"We were surprised. We looked for her and we had always wondered what had happened to her," Lisa said.

A series of unlikely events went into returning Mona to her family.

And it started when Lisa saw a commercial for city's Animal Care Services advertising a deaf dog named Mona up for adoption.

Lisa and Jack went to the facility and showed staff the sign language they taught Mona as a puppy. Mona was still wearing the tags Lisa put on her showing her name and disability.

"I don't know sign language, but I did three things: no, come here, and stay. So that's all she knows," Lisa said.

She was picked up by the city's Animal Care Services in the summer of 2008. During her time there she was adopted and returned... twice. Staff says some people struggle to deal with animals with special needs.

Mona was also on the list to be euthanized at the facility several times. Staff there routinely puts down animals who aren't adopted, but something about Mona made the staff give her another chance at life.

The Ramirez family says they are grateful.
"People don't understand that you love your dogs or cats. They're part of the family, and we just can't say," Jack said. "Words are not enough," added Lisa.
