Dog hero story a wake up call to deaf, hearing impaired - News14.com

Gaston County fire investigators feel a man is alive only because of the actions taken by his dog, Jamaica.

Late Monday night, Darel Arnold took out his hearing aid when he went to bed. An hour later, his dog jumped on Arnold alerting him to a fire. Both were able to make it out unharmed.

"The possibilities of death did exist," said Gaston County deputy Fire Marshall Robert Michaleski.

He says this story is a wake up to the more than 1 million deaf or hearing impaired in North Carolina.

"I think some people rely on just smelling the smoke," said Michaleski. "At night, some may not think about taking their hearing aids out and not having the ability to hear a smoke detector."

Gaston County has handed out more than 4,000 smoke detectors in the past 15 to 20 years, but only a handful specifically designed for the hard of hearing.

"They have a louder decibel level. They have a strobe. They have ones that will go under your pillow to wake you up," said Michaleski.

Most fire departments will provide and possibly install a smoke detector in your home.

If I wore my HA to bed I do not think I would hear the smoke detector go with my bedroom door close.
