Do You Have a Story Idea(s) (Novel or Short Story) in Your Head Right Now?

If so, tells us something (not all of course) about your idea(s) for a novel or short story. Warning: Don't post anything that would allow another viewer of this thread to steal your idea(s).

I have one which I want to title Dream Runner. It's a treasure hunt (adventure) in the Amazon jungle. It's one heck of a long novel (if I ever do decide to write it) and it all fits together very well...nice ending too.

I also have a couple of short story ideas. The titles being: Asleep in Death, Inventing Love, Bottomless and others....

Yes I do have an idea of wanting to write a story but is not sure where to really start.

It about my journey of life as a Deaf person. Or a book in memory of my mother. I have written many poems that i would like to publish but still need more poems to make a good book.
 
AB, have you had your book(s) published? How do you go about writing a book? Any advice for any of us who might want to try writing?
 
I have a lot of story ideas in my head but not sure if I want to expose them. *pointing at everyone* thieves... heh

I had the first 5 or 6 chapters of a novella/novel written on my old desktop before it crashed out. The hard drive was completely wiped clean so about 2 months of hard work dissappeared. I had probably close to 15,000 words banged out.
 
About a woman that was a lonely alcoholic who secretly admired her best friend. Her best friend happened to be married to the son of a millionaire, when her best friend mysteriously dies suddenly, things get ugly and fast.
 
sounds like an interesting idea, will you eventually go back and take another attempt at this story?
 
I dont know - it would need serious revision no matter what. Looking back on how I wrote it, I think perhaps I waxed on too long in certain areas and not enough in others.

What I would do first is write a skeleton (or outline) of the story- beginning middle and end. Then divide it into sections. These sections should eventually evolve into chapters. Arrange the sections in the order you want to tell the story. For example I have a story that I am trying to write that starts in the present then shifts to the past before ending in the future (sci-fi story) similar to The Door Into Summer by Robert A Heinlein- if you are familiar with that novel. Then I would place all my focus on developing the characters. Characterization, from the how-to writing books I’ve read, and from my novels reading in general, is vital (paramount!) to a successful story. Then after that step, I would start doing whatever research I need to do for those parts of the novel that need authentication- a good example would be the story I mentioned in my initial post. I would need to do tons of research on the history of the Amazon River, its tribes, animal species, vegetation, (etc.). Then, once I have some meat on those bones (skeleton, or outline) I would write my very first draft. After that, I would let it rest for a month or two and read it again with new eyes, make omissions, additions or what have you thus producing a second draft. This time I would make certain that the grammar is clear- that is, that the mechanics are perfect before I continue forth to the next step which is to have friends/family who are also avid readers to read the draft in order to get their input. Then I would write yet another draft (inspired by that information) and I would let it rest for another two or three months. If the changes are few and minor I would modify those and type a final draft as indicated by each publisher’s specs. Then I would send it in and hope for the best.

That’s the formula I will follow. I am sure it will change as I continue to learn the craft of writing (my current project).
