you calm down please smithtr, i coming to you and give you hug with kiss :kiss: ignoring them ok? me full deaf 100 percent too. i am loving and appreciate to wonderful supportive deaf world and meeting many deafs same background. you not need complain, i am have no speech too. i cannot talk voicing, i only asl!!!! do not let people forcing you speech therapy. my parents deaf taught me not need be try fitting to hearing world and talking like hearing. they wanting me be not changes myself, they encourage me be link my deaf culture. audism need be TERMINATE!!!!!!!

You're talking about kids being audist to other kids, how do you stop kids from acting like kids? Should we put the child up for the death penalty and make an example? This isn't a problem you can solve before it happens. Unfortunately, it's something every generation has to go through. I wish it wasn't true, but it is.

We teach them. However an audist adult cannot teach a kid to be anything but an audist child. Children are not born audist. It is a learned attitude. Yes, it is a problem you can solve before it happens. Another child does not have to be taught to be an audist. Just because previous generations have gone through it doesn't mean that it has to be, nor does it mean that it is acceptable.

What do you do about audism, other than lay down and accept it?

Nope. He went as suggested through his IEP until he expressed a desire to stop. Then he went no more.

African Americans suffered from racism and instead of bleaching their skin white in an attempt to cope with it, they had the Civil Rights movement. It would be great if the Deaf, instead of focusing on less than perfect technology to cope with audism, organize their own movement to promote awareness and education about deaf children in mainstream settings.

When I was growing up, I only saw a group of deaf people signing just once until I reached age 18. The deaf community needs to be more visible, need to put on shows and performances in public schools, do more outreach programs in society. Until they do, the world at large will remain ignorant.

I don't believe that is true, kids do things because they don't know any better and because they want to do it. And, even if you attempt to teach them it is no guarantee they are going to learn it. The most you can do is try to teach respect which we have already been doing for years. You can't make kids like other kids. As adults, we tolerate people because we have to, we work with people because we have to and this is a good thing. But you can't expect a kid to have the comprehension of an adult.

What would I do? I'd teach my kids how the world really is and to be realistic about it.

You can blame people for being inactive if it makes you feel better.

The signing deaf community is notoriously small and are usually more prevalently seen in larger cities. Rochester, NY is one of the best example when you have such a large presence of signing deaf population compared to other cities. Outside of metropolitan cities, suburban and rural areas there's less opportunity to see deaf people signing.

What makes them want to do it? They are taught the idea of superiority from the very beginning. I can see where you are coming from, but you are completly ignoring the ways in which children are taught these things, implicity. No, you can teach much more than respect. Few do, however.

We do what we do as adults because of what we were taught as children. We carry on the legacy because we do things like ignore the very impact of what messages we were given as children and the impact it has had. As a result, we tend to minimize and say, "No. That is just the way things are.":cool2

Unfortunately, there were always those few who attempted to pass, for the same reasons that so many deaf attempt to pass today. How sad that racism and audism has such a negative impact on one's internalized idea of their own worth.
