Hello all,
My name is Sian Alder and I am a profoundly deaf undergraduate student studying third year Bsc hons in forensic science and psychology. I am currently undertaking psychological research in to deaf and hearing people. Before I go any further, I do appreciate that the word 'deaf' may cause problems as there are many definitions of deaf and people may not like certain people to use this word - however this is the only way that I could distinguish between deaf and hearing in my research but I have taken this in account and have included statements about this.
My dissertation research is looking in to whether deaf people construct their deafness in the same way as hearing people. The research is a Q-methodology analysis, which involves sorting out statements according to your agreement or disagreement on a scale between -5 and +5. All it is, is placing your statements of how much you agree or disagree on to a grid (on a scale) showing your opinion (not anyone else’s) of your views of deaf and hearing peoples perspective of deaf people in general. There is a demographic and short questionnaire as well just to give me a little bit of information about yourself and experiences so that I can support your views of the statements based on this. The whole procedure would take between 30-60 minutes to complete. There will be a Q-pack of which will have consent, information, instruction forms, questionnaire, and Q-sort grid/statements.
If you would like to take part or know of other hearing or deaf/hard of hearing etc people that would like to take part - please email me your address on (Mod's Edit - Email address has been removed; Anyone wishing to obtain the poster's email address, please send a PM to the poster) I will need at least 30 deaf and 30 hearing people over 18 years of age to carry out my research. I would really appreciate your views/thoughts on this as this will form a great and vital part of my research and could well be publishable. I will be more than happy to send you the Q-pack when I receive your email and addresses and your verbal consent. All information given will be kept completely confidential and anonymous in the research according to the British Psychological Society ethical guidelines of research. Only I and my supervisor will have access and read your information and will be kept in lockable storage in my supervisors office; any information about you will be numbered so no names or addresses will be used in my dissertation.
I will look forward to your reply and all information will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
Sian
