There is currently one permanent, full-time position available with the Office of Student Learning and Partnerships at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) in Salem. This position is Director of the Oregon School for the Deaf.

The Oregon School for the Deaf is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to become self-fulfilled, productive citizens. OSD currently has approximately 100 deaf and hard of hearing students, many of whom live on campus during the week, and shares a campus with two charter schools in Salem, Oregon. The OSD director reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning and Partnerships.

The purpose of this position is under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Student Learning and Partnerships at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), the Director provides instructional leadership and is responsible for management of the daily operation for all aspects of the school—Administration, Clerical, Education, Nutrition Services, Dormitory/Recreation, Athletics/Student Services, Maintenance/Custodial/Plant facilities, Health Services, Evaluation and Library Media Center, and OSD Outreach. The Director sets student achievement goals, is responsible for budget preparation and oversight, makes personnel decisions and evaluates programs. The Director works directly with students, parents, OSD’s site council, organizations for the Deaf, local school districts, Institutions of Higher Education, ODE, service organizations, associations representing personnel, other agencies and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

THIS POSITION REQUIRES FLUENCY IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

Four (4) years of management experience in a public or private organization which included responsibility for each of the following:

a) development of program rules and policies;
b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans;
c) program evaluation; and
d) budget preparation.

OR

Three (3) years of management experience in a public or private organization which included responsibility for each of the following:

a) development of program rules and policies;
b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans;
c) program evaluation; and
d) budget preparation. AND 45-48 quarter hours (30-32 semester hours) of graduate level coursework in management.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

Experience managing special education programs, personnel management in education, school and district administration, curriculum coordination, classroom teaching, teacher preparation and comprehensive school district planning.
Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, particularly within the Deaf community
Demonstrated experience leading and managing a diverse team
History of advocacy with families, community and legislature
Demonstrated experience working with and in the Deaf community
Demonstrated experience in language acquisition, particularly with ASL students
