Difference between banned and expelled?

It's common that users are banned for a period of time or forever. What is the difference between being banned and expelled? I've noticed this under the name of past users.
 
You get the option to have custom user titles if you become a premium member.

Banned just means banned, and most of the time it cannot be set by yourself along with some other titles.
