Deputies nab teens accused of assaulting deaf man on bus

A quick response by Wayne County Sheriff's deputies assigned to patrol a Detroit Department of Transportation bus led to the arrest of two teens accused of assaulting and robbing a deaf passenger.

Sheriff Warren C. Evans said today that about 3 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a complaint of a disabled man who had been the victim of an assault on a coach at Meyers and Curtis on the city's west side. The victim, 36-year-old Highland Park man, was on his way home when the incident happened.

Police said the suspects, ages 17 and 16, rang the bell for the bus to stop. Before they exited the vehicle, they allegedly struck the man in the face, stole his glasses and hat and fled on foot.

Within seven minutes, a DDOT unit arrived on scene and interviewed the victim who was treated at the scene for minor injuries to his face.

Descriptions of the suspects were put out over the sheriff's radio system. Within five minutes, another sheriff's unit located the two suspects walking about a half-mile away at Meyer and Seven Mile.

One of the suspects had the victim's eyeglasses in his possession, police said. Investigators will look in to whether these two suspects may have been involved in any other recent incidents on DDOT buses.

Both suspects are expected to be arraigned Monday on charges of unarmed robbery.

"Unfortunately, these kinds of incidents will occur from time to time, but this is the type of response we want DDOT passengers to come to expect when something like this does happen," Evans said.
