From November 10 to 15, the entire nation observes Deaf Awareness Week as per Presidential Proclamation No. 829 issued on November 8, 1991.

In a release, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the education of hearing impaired should fit their special needs and be directed toward the development of their maximum potential to enable them to enjoy a meaningful and productive life.

“The ultimate goal of DepEd’s special education program is the integration of learners with special needs into the regular school system and eventually into the community,” said Luistro.

The education chief added that hearing impairment is not only about inability to hear but it also encompasses emotional problems in socialization and difficulty in learning.

The Deaf Awareness Week aims to enhance significant public awareness on the prevention, early detection, intervention, rehabilitation, and education of people with hearing impairment.

In 2009, the National Council on Disability Affairs listed around 100 SPED Centers in public schools and more than 20 government special schools in Metro Manila.

The week-long observance is in cooperation with the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Colleges of Education (Special Education), Rehabilitation Sciences (Speech Language Pathology), and Tourism and Hospitality Management (Community Services). (DepEd/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
