DeKalb County police are searching for the person who stabbed and killed a deaf woman.

Investigators said the woman was killed sometime early Sunday morning.

A neighbor said she was woken up by strange noises, but couldn't figure out what was going on.

Police said the woman shared an apartment with her twin sister.

Dekalb County police are not yet releasing the victim's name, but said the victim was deaf and home alone when someone came to her apartment and stabbed her.

Police haven't identified any suspects.

DeKalb police continued on Monday evening to investigate the stabbing death of a 21-year-old woman found Sunday morning in her apartment bedroom.

Police said there were no suspects in the apparent murder of Tekelia Blackshear.

Investigators on Monday evening were searching the grounds of the Oak Creek Apartment complex in Avondale Estates, at one point even lowering one officer with rubber rain boots into a storm drain.

Police spokesman Officer Jason Gagnon would only say that police were following up on leads.

The woman was found around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, Gagnon said.

"I heard a woman screaming," from Blackshear's apartment, neighbor Joe Cook said. "When I looked outside later, there were fire trucks and police cars and they were putting up the yellow tape."

A neighbor in called 9-1-1 after finding the woman, police said.

Police believe the woman was stabbed multiple times.

Cook said Blackshear and her twin sister, with whom she lived, were "nice good people," whom he often spoke to only in passing.

"I didn't know she was deaf, until I tried to speak to her one day, and she started signing," Cook said.

Police continue to investigate.

Authorities have added rape charges to accusations against the neighbor of a deaf woman murdered in her apartment Sunday morning.

Darrel Charles Smith, 21, appeared before DeKalb Magistrate Court Judge Abbi Taylor Wednesday night to hear charges against him.

Through a sign language interpreter, Smith, who is also deaf, was asked if he understood the second charge against him.

"Do you understand the charges that you handcuffed her and raped her, having carnal knowledge of her, before stabbing her to death," Taylor asked Smith.

Bond may be set by a Superior Court judge at a later date. His next appearance is scheduled for Nov. 4.

Tekelia Blackshear, 21, died from multiple stab wounds. Her neighbor at the Oak Creek Apartment complex, Smith, was apprehended by the DeKalb Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad and is being held without bond in the county jail.

A neighbor said he heard screams coming from Blackshear's apartment around 8 a.m. Sunday. The victim's twin sister, who lived with her, was at work at the time of the murder.

Police have not released a motive in the killing.

Deaf Woman's Sister Says Accused Killer Is Not Guilty

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County police said a deaf man stabbed his neighbor -- a deaf woman -- to death. But the woman’s twin sister said she thinks police have the wrong man.

Just as family members of Tekelia Blackshear came together to remember her, news came of an arrest in the killing. Raw emotion poured out of Blackshear's twin sister LeQuita.

"That was my other half, my twin sister, that's my other half, he just took half of me, you know what I mean? I have to deal with this for the rest of my life. That was my other half right there, I was the closest thing she had,” said LeQuita Blackshear.

Police said her next door neighbor, Darell Smith, also deaf, stabbed the 21-year-old Georgia Perimeter College student to death. A neighbor discovered her body inside her own apartment on Sunday. Sources told Channel 2 that Tekelia was wearing fake handcuffs that appeared to be broken.

The news came as a surprise to family members, who said she had no enemies.

"It was shocking, more than anything, we (were) shocked,” said the victim’s cousin, Anthony Berry. "We never know who our friends are. That’s why we depend on God as our friend, as our savior."

But Tekelia Blackshear's sister doesn't believe Smith killed her twin sister.

"He loved her man, that man loved her. Like that was his sister, man. That man has been around for I don't know how long. He's been in the family for I don't know how long. He did not do that, he did not do that,” said LeQuita Blackshear.
