Defendant Slits Wrists in Front of Judge

Well, he killed and ate a 4 year old girl for starters. He's said to have had like 58 nails in his pelvic area.

Yes, he used to insert needles into his groin, and then remove them. Later on, he began inserting them so deeply that he could not remove them. He also beat himself with a nail studded paddle, and had an obsession with castration. He also suffered from religious delusions. The list just goes on and on.

I just googled on Albert Fish and saw a 1903 picture of him in his bowler hat. This Fish was fried in 1936 at Sing Sing for the murder of 10-year old Grace Budd. He admitted to killing two other children. It is possible he had killed three others.

Sing Sing? damn that's only about 40 min away from me. that means his ghost soul is nearby :cold:

That would be the one and the same we are talking about.

You're right on this one. I don't see how anyone can do this to themselves.

Intellectually, I can explain it with a long history of mental illness in his family, sadomasochistic obsessessions, religious delusions, etc. Beyond that, I can't say that I understand it on an emotional level, either. I know for certain that he was a very disturbed and sick individual. Do I have an understanding of his exact mental and emotional motivations? Not a clue.

According to Albert Fish, he was placed in the orphanage where he was whipped. He was there when he was five until almost 9. He saw boys there doing alot of things that they should have done. That is where things went wrong for him. I think you said stress could trigger the mental illiness.

Also few of his family members have mental illiness as well.

What kind of religious delusions did he have?

Stress can definitely play a factor in the development of mental illness as can abuse.

In fact, many people diagnosed with depression or bipolar also have a co-morbid diagnosis of PTSD.

Given his family history, I'd say that he was definately predisposed to mental illness. The actual manifestation of a disorder is most often the interaction between the predisposition, and something in the environment. It could have just as easily been the environment he was exposed to prior to 5. Hard to say. There is no one thing that can be pin pointed to say, "This is what caused him to cannabilize, or this is what caused him to self harm, or this is what caused him to murder." And still, even though I have a full understanding that he is the product of both his genetic tendencies and his environment, on an emotional level, his actions are still difficult to understand.

He heard the voices of the apostles talking to him, if I remember correctly.

Yikes. As you know, I hear voices myself (although I'm now on meds and no longer do as long as I'm not having an episode), but I've never heard any that were religious in nature. All of mine were family (including my deceased parents), friends and complete strangers.

Fish is someone I think would be fascinating to study when it comes to the relationship between trauma/abuse and mental illness.

Yes, his case is very interesting. Bizarre and sometimes downright frightening, but interesting all the same.

This reminds me of a comment I saw in a lawyer movie once. This guy was on trial for murder. Before he went to the court house, he smeared his butt with peanut butter. When he showed up in court, he jumped on the table... stuck his hand down his pants... acted like he wiped his butt... then took his hand out showing the "poop" on his hands. He then took a nice long lick and suck off his hands. Because of that, the judge declared him insane.

I'm off peanut butter forever. :barf:

Thanks a lot, Vampyrox. :barf:
