Deafness 'can lead to divorce' - Telegraph

The hard-of-hearing partner often feels upset that their spouse does not understand what it is like to suffer from the condition, the poll found.

But the deaf person's reluctance to recognise their condition and do anything about it is also a major source of stress.

A third of respondents to the study, which questioned more than 1000 people with deafness over 40, said their inability to hear properly had led to arguments with the family.

And one in 16 said their partner had even threatened to leave or divorce them unless they got their hearing sorted out.

Joan McKechnie, an audiologist with the firm HearingDirect.com, which carried out the survey, said the problem was that many people were "in denial".

She said: "It can be a real shock for many people in their middle age who begin to experience hearing loss, as they do not like the idea of wearing a hearing aid, which has a real stigma associated with 'disabled' and old people.

Instead, they battle on in denial trying to cope as best they can."

The survey found that one in five of the nine million people estimated to suffer from some form of deafness had lied about it to friends and family.

Two-thirds also admitted to bluffing their way through conversations, while a half said they had become depressed and isolated.

A spokesman for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) said: "Incredibly it can take up to 15 years for some people with hearing loss to get the help they need, a sad fact when you consider the impact hearing loss has on family and work life.

"People with hearing loss often feel isolated from work colleagues and loved ones, and we would encourage anyone who thinks they may have a hearing loss to take action now.”

HearingDirect.com has launched an online simulator so people can experience something of what it is like to begin to lose one's hearing.

Another marketing.. Just about every hearing aids dispensers say the same thing.

Nope, it is reality everywhere, including United States. From what I learn at RIT, 88% of Deaf/Hearing marriage last 5 years before divorce. 88% is very high. Yeah, at first I didn't believe this but after doing research it becomes more apparent.

Sad but true. I have met several who already divorced from hearing spouse. All of them share the same reasons for divorce. First it is communication issues, second it is culture conflict. Does not matter if Deaf got CI or not and expert in oral.

Seriously, I even met Deafies who have married to terp and warned me not to marry Terp because terp will screw you big time after divorce. I know not all terps will do that but I have seen enough already.

Is it happen in UK only?

When my aunt became totally deaf, she totally isolated herself from the social world. She died a lonely woman. CI would help but she didn't get one.

or learning ASL and joining the Deaf community as another option.

That's sad about your aunt.

because of divorce court issues, such as you could lose the house, car or all debt goes to deaf person?

Each cases are different, but it is not the reason why divorce happens. These stuff happens with most divorces.

That's interesting, both my dad and grandpa are both late deafened. My grandparents stayed together til the end, we had to speak up louder to talk to my grandfather.

I'm trying to find reason about why terp screwed deaf person after divorce.

Well, divorces are ugly as it is. I can imagine terp take advantage of a person because he is deaf. Just like spouses to sneak behind other spouses when they plan on getting a divorce such as taking money out of their bank account without their knowledge.

Oh, interesting.

Thanks to both of you and diehardbikers for warn me about marriage issues with between deaf and hearing.

Not saying all of them are like that, I just think that's what biker is talking about. All I know that divorces can be ugly.

Right, not every divorce is same. It depends the degree of anger, resentment, etc between spouses. Some just agree to divorce and let go which can be least ugly divorce because they BOTH knew and accept that neither works out., Other side divorce can be darn ugly if both couldn't agree nothing about each other.
