A post mortem has formally identified a body found north of Christchurch as that of Emma Agnew.
Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says the cause of death was suffocation.
The body of Ms Agnew, 20, can now be released to her family.
Liam James Reid, 35, unemployed, appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday charged with her murder on 15 November.
After a brief appearance, he was remanded in custody until 20 December.
Mr Reid was arrested on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Ms Agnew's body was discovered in Spencer Park, north of Christchurch.
The scene is still being examined by police.
Funeral arrangements
A funeral for Ms Agnew will be held on Monday at the Burnside High School auditorium in Christchurch, which can accommodate 700 people.
The family has requested privacy as they grieve. The media will not be allowed to broadcast images or audio from inside the funeral.
