Radio New Zealand News : Latest News : 200711301424 : Deaf woman was suffocated, post mortem reveals

A post mortem has formally identified a body found north of Christchurch as that of Emma Agnew.

Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says the cause of death was suffocation.

The body of Ms Agnew, 20, can now be released to her family.

Liam James Reid, 35, unemployed, appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday charged with her murder on 15 November.

After a brief appearance, he was remanded in custody until 20 December.

Mr Reid was arrested on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Ms Agnew's body was discovered in Spencer Park, north of Christchurch.

The scene is still being examined by police.

Funeral arrangements

A funeral for Ms Agnew will be held on Monday at the Burnside High School auditorium in Christchurch, which can accommodate 700 people.

The family has requested privacy as they grieve. The media will not be allowed to broadcast images or audio from inside the funeral.

The Funeral will be on Monday at 2.30pm NZT as will be broadcast Live at the Deaf clubs around NZ so we can share the grieve with the family and to witness the funeral.

It will be a very sad day for all of us deaf Nzers as it will be the last day to say farewell to our friend and that we will meet another day. Please pray for the families on that day as they gathered around Emma's coffin for the last time.
