Miriam Richards, 40, is a mountain climber on a mission. Having climbed 49 of the 50 highest peaks in the 50 U.S. states, she is very close to realizing one of her life dreams. Miriam's climbing accomplishments are significant. As well as all her climbing in America, she has also climbed Africa’s highest, Kilimanjaro. She climbs with good friend and interpreter Hilary White.
Richards lives in a world without sound and also suffers from multiple sclerosis, but does not let these disabilities hold her down. "People that just found out they have MS, I tell them 'don't give up.'" she says. "I'm not going to let that take over my life…MS people have beautiful hearts, and MS just steals your body, but it doesn't steal our spirits."
The final mountain hurdle between her and record-ship is Mount Denali, for which she is training hard. Her climbing career hasn’t all been plain sailing. In 1999 Richards suffered a serious fall and multiple broken bones during her attempt on Oregon’s Mount Hood, and had to be air lifted out. Bouncing back after the ordeal, she managed to summit the mountain on her third attempt.
