WeAreCentralPA.com - Deaf woman needs service dog
Imagine how vulnerable you would feel if you could not hear the sound of oncoming traffic or could not tell when a safety alarm rang or even when someone was at your door.
That's what life is like for Leslie Kelly of Altoona who is deaf.
She had a hearing service dog for more than nine years. However the animal developed cancer and died in January.
Now Leslie needs to raise $4,000 to help pay for a new dog that's undergoing training in Harrisburg.
She has already spent some time with the black lab named Wendy.
"I got her for four days during Mothers Day weekend and it was like she was there. She just fit right in and it's gonna work out just fine," said Leslie Kelly.
Service dogs are extremely helpful to the hearing impaired. They alert their owners of oncoming traffic, when someone enters a room, when the phone is ringing or door bell is buzzing and when babies are crying or calling for help just to name a few.
Leslie's friends are collecting soda cans and soda can tabs to raise money.
They are also holding a spaghetti dinner on July 19 to help her raise the money she needs to get the service dog.
The spaghetti dinner will be held at the Becky Sheetz Recreation Center located on Valley View Blvd. The dinner will last from 12 p.m until 4 p.m and tickets are $6.50.
Saving soda tabs and/or buying a ticket to the spaghetti dinner would help Leslie get the service dog.
For more information on saving tabs, making a donation or buying a ticket to the spaghetti dinner, you can call Roxann Doughty at 944-0531.
