Deaf volunteers help out with Bastrop County relief - YNN - Your News Now

Distribution centers providing relief to Bastrop County fire victims are bustling places loaded with people, and good communication is vital. One group of volunteers showed they don’t need speech to help.

Hearing impaired volunteers with the Austin Spirit of Life Deaf Church spent time Monday helping distribute relief to victims of the devastating Bastrop County fire.

With the help of an interpreter, Ken Mahoney said he was glad to answer his church’s call to action.

"In my heart, I just feel like I should come and help them out and I'm feeling really sad for the victims that have lost their homes. I want to be there to support them."

Debbie Stiles is a pastor at the church and was on-hand to translate. She wants the deaf community of Bastrop to know that specific help is available for them.

"We want to provide that communication and emotional support and it's not about you know competition between the churches at all. It's all about helping each other,” Stiles said. “Deaf helping Deaf."

The church is looking for more volunteer interpreters to help them get the deaf community involved.

If interested in volunteering, contact Debbie Stiles by video phone at (512) 861-2950 or by telephone at (512) 673-7005.
