Yes I know and was like :confused: over that word "special" and "brave"... All what I want to say is the word "handicapped" belongs "TOP TEN WORST WORDS"

The worst one for me is special. I had so many adults, teachers, family, or parents' friends, constantly tell me how special I am all because I could "talk". I remember everytime someone said that to me especially when I was a teenager, I wanted to scream. Interesting to see that word on this list. Guess I am not the only one who feels that way about that word. :ugh:

I tried to figure out why "special" and "brave" is on the list... until you posted...

Oh I got it... Thank you for share your experience as feel being treat like that when anyone kept said how special you are because you are different as hearing people who can "talk". I can understand how you feeling... Your point is you are expect to being treat normal like everyone, not just "special" that because you are deaf and can talk.

I guess it could be the same for "brave" as well... They would not like to hear when anyone keep on tell them how brave they are etc... for accept their deafness, blind, etc. when they consider themselves as normal people or how brave they are to bring "handicapped" children up like that, etc. or brave ... brave... brave... keep on question...how... you must be brave... wow... :roll: Those people said like that to my hubby's mother when they found out my hubby's deaf at age 3. You must be brave to keep that deaf child... you know that deaf has no future, etc... They were being influence by Hilter time... They were like :jaw: that my hubby lead normal life like hearing people... Oh well

There is nothing wrong with my eardrums. If there was then I would have had to use a BOHA type of Ha instead of a normal one. (like my sister has to, she does have rebuilt eardrum but her biggest problem is the bones in the middle ear are not working)

My problem is damage to the nerves (hairs) in the inner ear. So when talking about hearing loss/deafness remember that not everyone has damage to the ear drum. in fact most don't.

Yeah, some people became deaf due to illnesses such as scarlet fever, chicken pox or whatever that is. It depends on what caused them. My nerves don't work. It was already damaged when I was 3 months old. The high alitutude ( air pressure ) destroyed it when I was flew to see my grandma. My eardrums were underdeveloped at that time.

Shel90, i can relate EXACTLY what you said, about the word "Special" i Loathe the most. Back then when I was a teenager, I was naive too, to think they meant well. I think differently now, its like I'd wanna rip their heads off. When they dare to say that to me, I'd never show my true reaction as I'd just politely stare, not smile, and just think 'this is another patronising idiot". While this is nothing else I could do since very often these thickskulled morons are a real waste of time to explain to.

You can't be serious. I have not once heard of a hearing person telling a deaf parent of a deaf child that they are wrong for making the decision to not impant their child but I have heard over and over again the opposite. You can't have it both ways Shel. Either you are for a parents right to choose or you are not. And that means a deaf parents right to choose to not implant and a hearing parents right to choose to implant. I think her point about fear of the unknown is spot on. I constantly hear from the deaf cutlure that hearing parents don't accept our children for who they are if they decide to implant. Never have I heard a hearing parent tell a deaf parent they don't want to give their child the best chance in a hearing world because they decide not to implant. The double standards really have to stop. The bottom line is that a parent (hearing or deaf) has the right to do what they feel are in the best interest of their children. It's always been that way and it always will remain that way. Get over it and move on already.

Oh, rd, please go back and check some of fuzzy's, rick's, and cloggy's posts.

The fact is that you have left out a couple o f options....deaf parents also have a right ti implant, and hearign parents have a right not to implant.

What about the movie " Sound and Fury " I thought the grandmother got mad at the parents for not impant their child ?....Unless I read someone's post wrong in another thread...
