Deaf Unity Event - Living Lake Country

Deaf Unity here in Wisconsin is having their 2nd annual fundraiser to raise awareness on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence against those with hearing loss. Some of you may remember the former Deaf school located in the Milwaukee area that had a huge number of students (boys) abused at the hands of a priest there several years ago.

Just this week, another case has opened up in Lyndon Station, WI. Yet again, leaders and so-called role models of a community are involved. Here's the link on that story: Lyndon Station village president, brother charged with sexually assaulting boys

I could spend all day posting links to these cases from all over the United States. As a parent, I would strongly encourage you to see who you have living in your neighborhood that has been convicted of these crimes. Here's the link to the Sexual Offender website. find registered offenders

Just put in your address and a map will come up of anyone that has been convicted of sexual crimes against children in your area. If you click on the red boxes on the map, it will bring up a current picture of the offender as well as additional information of their crime. If you click on a school icon, that will bring up the closest offenders that are now living in the vicinity of the school.

It's a well known fact that a large number of assualt/domestic violence victims are, in some way or another, a person with a disability. For those with hearing loss, we tend to keep things to ourselves and have a very hard time reaching out for help or support.

Slowly, this is changing. As we learn what our rights are and encourage the participation as well as the support of others that are not disabled, we are learning how to end this situation. There are many survivors in our midst that are now willing to share their stories and experiences with us.

Recently, Deaf Unity became a non-profit association. They are in the process of getting a website up and I will pass the information on to all of you once they are up and running!

Have a great week!
