Deaf to get custom smoke alarms - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Specialised smoke alarms are about to be rolled out in the homes of deaf and hearing impaired Tasmanians to reduce their risk of death and injury.

The State Government is spending nearly $50,000 on the alarms which work by activating a strobe light and an under pillow vibrating pad.

The Human Services Minister Lin Thorp says many deaf people have been unable to afford the alarms which are a life-saving and necessary piece of equipment.

"The equipment also can be built on so it can take a baby alarm, it can alert people to the fact the phone's ringing or someone's at the front door," she said.

"So its about making sure we've got equity and fairness in the whole community."
