Deaf teenager completes arduous charity ride - Ross-shire Journal

A PROFOUNDLY deaf teenager with a passion for horses has raised around £1,000 for the association which taught her to ride by undertaking an arduous eight-hour trek on her beloved pony, Cody.

Monica Foster (16) completed her 40-mile trek from her home village of Marybank to Scardroy and back in just under 11 hours last weekend and expected to double her fundraising target of £500 — she has already banked £883 and estimates the final total will be over £1,000.

Monica decided to take on the challenge on her pony Cody, a 17-year-old Arab Cross Welsh Cob, because she wanted to do something to give back to the people at the Riding for the Disabled Association and Borlum Farm near Drumnadrochit who have helped her.

Monica was born profoundly deaf and she lip reads and signs. She has a cochlear implant which helps her hear environmental sounds.

She became hooked on horses when a family friend took her out on one when she was five and from then on attended the RDA centre at Borlum every week for 10 years until she was 15.

She had to overcome balance problems to become an accomplished rider and at the age of eight she could ride a horse, but could not ride a bike.

Her mother Jill said they wished to thank everyone who sent in donations and helped make Monica's ride such a fundraising success.
