Deaf teen runaway arrested for burglary | runaway, teen, hiding - Hesperia Star - The Star of the West
Authorities found a 14-year-old Apple Valley runaway hiding in the bed of a pick up truck after the teen burglarized a family friend’s home in Hesperia Wednesday evening, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station officials said.
The deaf teen was arrested for burglary after investigators learned he was taken food, money and other items from the home on Hemlock Road near Sycamore Street, Sgt. John Mattke said.
“We found him hiding in the bed of a pick up truck in the victim’s property,” Mattke said. Because of the juveniles hearing impairment, deputies were able to locate him without him being aware of their presence.
Officials learned the home the teen had broken into was the home of a family friend, Mattke said.
While investigating the burglary, authorities received a call from a nearby home about a teen boy trying to climb over a fence, but was chased off by the homeowner, according to Mattke.
“The caller said the juvenile had made gestures that made him think the (teen) was deaf,” Mattke said. The caller also indicated the teen had left a suitcase behind as he ran off. Deputies recovered the suitcase and inside officials found a pillow, blanket and comforter. They determined the black suitcase belonged to the Apple Valley Teen.
The boy was booked into the High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Center.
