Deaf teen finds new way to use his voice | 9news.com
An internship is one of those coveted opportunities to learn from professionals and possibly expand career goals. Phizel Reynolds has done both in just a couple of months time.
Phizel was 3 years old, when doctors realized he was deaf. Early on, he learned sign language but didn't always have the chance to use it.
"My father wanted me to use my voice. I just have had a hard time communicating with hearing people, using my voice, understanding my family's voices - that's tough for me," Phizel said.
Despite his challenges, Phizel graduated from Aurora Central High School this spring. One of his counselors suggested he apply for the Earn 'N Learn summer internship program under Goodwill's Youth Services department.
Through the interview process, Phizel made quite an impression. He was hired to work in the Deaf Services Program.
Less than a month after he started, Phizel was teaching other interns sign language.
Joaquin Reyna is one of the interns learning from Phizel. He says this is a skill he hopes to use throughout his life.
"You want to get to know somebody, you want to see what they're about and then you can't because you simply don't know their language," Reyna said.
For his part, Phizel has enjoyed this teaching opportunity.
"I feel like I want to teach them a lot more, I want to be able for them to communicate with me fully so we can create better friendships," Phizel said.
Phizel has an instant connection with the clients that come to the Deaf Services program at Goodwill. It was started 10 years ago and has served about 12-hundred people in the community.
After his internship is complete, Phizel will attend the ColoradoSchool for the Deaf and Blind before starting school at Pikes Peak Community College.
