Deaf teacher to travel to Korea - KCTV5 - Kansas City News, Weather and Sports

Communication can sometimes be a problem and it can be even more difficult if a person is deaf. Ladonna Snyder, of Olathe, is about to find out how deaf people from all over the world deal with communication issues during a trip of a lifetime.

"I'm so excited," said Snyder.

In just four days, Snyder will be heading to Korea. The Olathe resident and Kansas School for the Deaf instructor was recently selected to be a part of the DeafNation No Barriers program. The idea of No Barriers is to get people, who are deaf from all over the world, together. The goal is to share ideas and find out how deaf people from other cultures around the world communicate.

"I know that we have an American deaf culture here in the united states and other countries may not be aware of or may not understand what deaf culture is and so that's something that we can do is help other countries understand that they do have a culture"," explains Snyder.

Snyder has been deaf since she was 9-months-old. Now, she helps teach kids that it's okay to be deaf. She wants them to understand they can live independent lives and she's hoping to prove that to them by taking this trip.

"Me as a deaf person or anybody that's in the deaf community can do anything," said Snyder.

The trip will last seven days and will take Snyder to places she's never seen before. She'll meet other deaf people and have a chance to speak one language with them.

"I want to see how other people live, for example the technology. What kind of technology do they use, what kind of sign language do they use there?" she said.

Snyder, who is just one five chosen nationally for the trip to Korea, hopes to bring back information that she can share with her students.
