Deaf students will be 'lost' because of cuts | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com
I cannot believe Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) is going to get hit with yet another budget cut. The proposed cut is going to be 6 percent.
This is on top of the nearly 16 percent already cut in the past two years. That is more than $1.5 million in funding. Programs had to be cut then, too.
ISD is funded with precious state tax dollars. If funding is cut, five faculty members will lose their jobs, as well as programs.
What will their future be without ISD? They will be absorbed into public schools where there is no individualized education programs our children require due to their mental and physical needs.
These kids will be lost. They will grow up and be added to the masses that already absorb so much of our taxes through government assistance programs.
The state Legislature must not cut funding to Iowa School for the Deaf. We need these children to succeed to become productive members of society.
Children who are students at ISD are not only hearing impaired, but many face other health challenges as well.
My son goes to this school. I pay for most of his health care through my insurance and out-of-pocket expenses. ISD is an important piece to help my son (as with many other students at this school) to reach his goal to become a successful member of society.
