Deaf students rescued from blaze - General News - Austrian Times Online News - English Newspaper

Two deaf students have been freed from a fire.

The men aged 22 and 24 were sleeping in their shared room at the housing estate in Linz when the blaze broke out in a neighbouring dorm on Sunday morning. Fire fighters forcefully opened the door to their bedroom to free them.

Upper Austrian officials said today (Tues) the friends suffered from smoke intoxication. They added that no one else was injured as others got out of the building in time when they were alarmed by the screams of fellow tenants.

A burning cigarette on a mattress was identified as the reason for the fire which caused damage to the value of 5,000 Euros.

One day earlier, 150 firemen were engaged in fighting a blaze at a parquet flooring production firm in Hofstetten-Grünau, Lower Austria, for more than 15 hours.
