Christmas came early for the students of Gospel School for the Deaf after they were taken on an eco friendly retreat with the 2008 Hibiscus contestants at the Tiri Villa in Pacific Habour.

It was no ordinary trip for the 53 students as they were enlightened with the importance of eco tourism and how to build on environmental awareness by educating their peer group.

While it was something new for the mute students, it was Abor day for the 12 contestants as they help plant 11 “soga” trees– an endangered species to contribute to sustainable development.

“This is something out of our daily routine and I believe that the contestants have really enjoyed their day out. It’s a learning experience not only to contribute to environmental awareness but also to understand and to break the barrier of communication breakdown to the mute,” contestant coordinator Aqela Cakobau said.

Being discriminated against is one of the biggest setbacks the students face but Gospel School for the Deaf teacher Savitri Kisun said the students share the same mentality and they have the right to be educated.

“Communication is one of the biggest challenge and we face a lot of problems in trying to get the right message across to these kids. I have no doubt that this trip will always stay fresh in their mind and they’ll pass on whatever they’ve learnt today to their friends and family,” Kisun said.

Upon their arrival the contestants and the students were hosted refreshment before they were divided into two groups. The students assisted the queens to plant the 11 soga trees and their names were tagged on each plant.

Meanwhile, the sporting activities became the highlight of the trip and it was held after the lunch hosted by the villa staff.

The day culminated with a vote of thanks and the bus ride back to Suva.
