Deaf students get behind the scenes look at OSF | KDRV

About 60 deaf and hard of hearing students in the Southern Oregon Education Service District got the opportunity to meet a professional actor who faces similar challenges.

The students traveled to Ashland Monday to get a behind the scenes look at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival with Actor Howie Seago, who is in three plays this season at OSF. His acting resume is extensive. He is passionate about his profession. He's also deaf.

"There's not that many deaf professional actors that are working full time," Seago said... "And it's a fact that many deaf students aren't exposed to deaf adults, so they don't really know what they can accomplish in life," Seago said.

SOESD says many of the students go to schools where there are only a few other students who are hard of hearing. They say trips like this can pay off in the long run.

"What we have found is when we do this, all of a sudden these kids end up going to college and having wonderful careers," said Mark Moskowitz, with SOESD Programs for Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
