Deaf Service Center Elects Kenneth Tuma to Board of Directors | Earth Times News
Mr. Tuma joins the Deaf Service Center board to honor the memory of his late wife, a dedicated social worker who helped him develop a keen awareness of the needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing. “Ginger left me a unique gift of sign language and an understanding of basic deaf culture,” Mr. Tuma said, “and I look forward to putting it to use in a meaningful way.” He is currently married to Wendy Tuma, who works with him as a Landscape Architect and Urban Planner at Urban Design Kilday Studios and shares his passion for community outreach. The Tumas live in Palm Beach Gardens with their sons, William and Zachary.
In his position at Urban Design Kilday Studios, Mr. Tuma directs the firm’s major land planning and urban design projects.. Mr. Tuma also has an extensive background in special district financing, civil engineering, environmental science, transportation planning and gaining community consensus for approvals. Mr. Tuma received two bachelor of science degrees – in civil engineering and agronomy – from Ohio State University. He has been a featured speaker on land use topics for many organizations, including the State of Pennsylvania Transportation Engineering Conference, Florida Atlantic University, the Daily Business Review, Urban Land Institute (ULI), and WPBT2 “Issues”. He also served on the ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean District Council Technical Assistance Panel for The Margate Community Redevelopment Agency on The City Center Project.
The election of Mr. Tuma to the Deaf Service Center's board brings the total number of directors to eight. The board is chaired by Ms. Laura Newstead, Vice President of Branch Operations at Employers, a small business insurance group, and vice chaired by Mr. Peter Elwell, Town Manager of Palm Beach. Established in 1984, the Deaf Service Center of Palm Beach County is the only local agency devoted exclusively to meeting the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults. The agency provides information, services, products and support for individuals with hearing loss to assist them in achieving independence through communication access. On a weekly basis, the agency responds to an average of 500 questions about hearing loss, passes out approximately 60 free telephones specially designed for the hearing impaired, trains or speaks before approximately 200 people, and helps approximately one dozen individuals facing personal problems or concerns caused by hearing loss. The Deaf Service Center of Palm Beach County is partner agency of the Town of Palm Beach United Way and the United Way of Palm Beach County and is funded in part by the Board of County Commissioners.
About the Hearing Wellness Center Established in 1999, the Hearing Wellness Center is the audiology services branch of the Deaf Service Center. The Center offers comprehensive hearing evaluations free of charge to the public. Evaluation results are used to determine the best course of treatment for hearing disabilities. The Center provides a full line of hearing aid options from entry-level digital to high-end digital hearing aids and sees more than 60 individuals each week. The Center's doctorate-level audiologists are licensed in the State of Florida and do not receive commission.
